Vinyl, Luxury Vinyl, Sheet Vinyl - What are the differences? We often get asked about the differences of the different types of vinyl floors. Although there is some overlap and the terms are sometimes used interchangeably, the differences can be summarized as such: Vinyl Flooring The general "vinyl flooring" term typically refers to traditional standard vinyl floors, which are also known as "vinyl composition tile" (VCT). The main way in which regular vinyl floors ("VCT") differ from Luxury Vinyl Floors is in their construction. VCT floors are made of one solid layer. In contrast, Luxury Vinyl Floors are made of several layers, more like laminate or engineered hardwood. The other way that they differ is in how they can be installed. Traditional vinyl floors have to be glued down directly to the subfloor. On the other hand, Luxury Vinyl Floors can be installed using a number of methods, and some are even suitable for the floating installation, where the planks or tiles click together without the need for adhesive. Luxury Vinyl Floors As mentioned, Luxury Vinyl Floors primarily differ from traditional / standard VCT floors in that they are made of multiple layers. This is very significant, as the fact that Luxury Vinyl Floors are made of multiple layers gives it major advantages. The main one being that Luxury Vinyl Flooring is much more durable than it's VCT counterpart. It also looks much more realistic and similar to other types of flooring such as wood, tile or stone, as this multi-layer construction allows for high-quality printing techniques and embossing that add realistic textures and details to the surface. Among many other advantages, Luxury Vinyl Flooring is also typically more sound absorbent and comfortable than standard vinyl floors. Sheet Vinyl Flooring So now we've gone over the differences between standard / traditional VCT floors which are generally referred to simply as "vinyl flooring" and Luxury Vinyl Flooring. Where does Sheet Vinyl Flooring fall into all of this? Sheet vinyl floors are largely the same as standard VCT floors, in that they are made of a single layer of material and are glued down directly to the subfloor. The main way in how they differ is in their makeup, size, and how they are installed. VCT floors are usually made of cut tiles, typically in sizes of 12" x 12" or 12" x 24". Sheet vinyl flooring on the other hand is usually installed in large rolls that are rolled out and cut to fit the space. It is typically adhered to the subfloor using a full spread of adhesive. The adhesive is applied to the entire subfloor, and then the sheet vinyl is carefully laid on top and pressed down to create a bond. One of the key benefits of vinyl roll is that since it is installed as a solid large piece, it therefore has minimal seams where moisture could seep through. There you have it. Although the terms are often used interchangeably in many contexts, those are some of the main differences between the different types of vinyl floors.

What are the main advantages of vinyl flooring?Vinyl floors offer many advantages which make them highly preferable for specific applications, needs, and parts of the home. Some of the main advantages include: Water Resistance: Vinyl flooring is highly resistant to water and moisture, making it an ideal choice for areas prone to spills or moisture, such as kitchens, bathrooms, and basements. It can withstand water exposure without warping or damage. Durability: Vinyl flooring is known for its durability and ability to withstand heavy foot traffic, making it suitable for both residential and commercial spaces. It is resistant to scratches, dents, and stains, providing a long-lasting flooring solution. Easy Maintenance: Vinyl floors are easy to clean and maintain. They can be swept, vacuumed, or mopped regularly to keep them looking clean and fresh. Unlike other flooring options, vinyl does not require sealing, waxing, or polishing. Wide Range of Styles and Designs: Vinyl flooring comes in a vast array of styles, colors, and patterns, including options that mimic the look of natural materials like hardwood, stone, or tile. This allows homeowners to achieve the desired aesthetic without the high cost or maintenance associated with those materials. Comfort and Sound Absorption: Vinyl flooring has a soft and resilient surface, providing a comfortable underfoot feel. It also helps absorb sound, reducing noise transmission within the space and making it a quiet flooring option. Affordable: Vinyl flooring is generally more budget-friendly compared to other flooring options, such as hardwood or ceramic tiles. It offers a cost-effective way to achieve the desired look and functionality without breaking the bank. Easy Installation: Vinyl flooring is relatively easy to install, and many options come with convenient installation methods like click-lock systems or self-adhesive backing. This makes it a popular choice for DIY enthusiasts or those looking for a quick installation process.
